Our Philosophy of Care
Executive Director Christopher Nadeau was interviewed by Carol Anne Riddell of Channel 75 about PSGDC's dementia care programming. |
At Park Slope Geriatric Day Center (PSGDC) we want the best care for individuals living with a memory disorder and we are serious about it. For 28 years we have been providing evidenced based direct services to individuals and their caregivers, and we actively challenge the widely held assumption that Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders are hopeless and untreatable. There is life after diagnosis, and we see Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia as a treatable condition where we can profoundly improve the quality of life of both the individual and the caregiver. We seek to slow the rate of progression of the disease, sustain functional independence, reduce agitation, improve disease related behavioral symptoms, reduce or eliminate levels of depression, limit excess disability, and reduce caregiver burnout. Ultimately, our measure of success is improved quality of life and delayed institutionalization.
Through our innovative Social Adult Day programming, PSGDC meets the lifestyle and needs of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and related dementia disorders and their Caregivers. We operate two programs for those suffering from memory loss: the Lotus Club and Memory Life Services. Our transportation service offers escorted door-to-door wheelchair accessible transportation to-and-from the Center, a light breakfast, and full lunch is offered daily.
Therapeutic activities during the day reflect the latest techniques in evidenced based
memory programming, cognitive and physical enhancement, and seek to actively engage members in a fun filled day of socialization and active living. Our state-of-the art Memory Technology Center provides one-on-one computer based cognitive training, which engages two hemispheres of the brain, stimulating 16 cognitive functions.
Our programming seeks to impact positively upon the eight cognitive domains that are most commonly impaired: memory, language, perceptual skills, attention, constructive abilities, orientation, problems solving, and functional abilities. We seek to strengthen these areas as long as possible.
We also believe that caregiver supports and actions must change to meet the progressive changes of the disease. We do our best to help caregivers decide which interventions are most appropriate, at what time, and help them to evaluate their needs as things change.
